The detective Slattery mysteries

with Dr. Murphy

By Peter Slattery

The chiefs murder mystery

It all started off like any other day. I was in my office twiddling my thumbs, and Murphy was sleeping. The tea lady had just gone out of my office when I heard a noise coming from the chiefs office. So Murphy and I ran straight to his office, trying not to spill my coffee and getting an extra few biscuits off the tea lady. When we got to the chiefs office, there were a crowd of people looking over his dead body. Every was so upset, no one more than me though. I started to kick chairs and swear, I promised my self I would find out who killed my chief.

For the rest of that day everything was so quiet, you could hear all the breathing of the person in the other side of the building. There was one thing to do before I started looking for clues. I had to wake up Murphy and tell him the news.

"Murphy I have some bad news." I said

"Don't tell me Alan Ferguson is up to his old tricks." He said

"No worse." I said

"It's Why isn't it he on the rampage is he." He said

"No. The chief is dead." I said

"What, No it can't be true. You're messing." He said

"I am telling the truth." I said

"He died so young, what age was he."  He said.

"Fifty nine, It's strange one minute he is screaming at you to get a job done, the next he is lying on the floor of his office covered in blood." I said

"Yea strange isn't it." He said, and then broke down and cried.

By the time I dried his tears, and wiped his nose. It was time for him to go back to go back to bed. So I was on my own to look for clues. I started at the murder scene, the chiefs office. There was a bullet hole in the window, and blood on the carpet. There was one clue to the mystery, a locked drawer in his desk. I managed to open it, after ten attempts. I looked in to the drawer, it was full of betting slip's, and letters from people saying that he owed them money. It all pointed to one thing, the chief was killed because he was in debt. It's not the first case of this, and it won't be the last.

The next day Murphy and I started to look for money lenders, who did loan the chief money. But I could not find any in the office so we decided to look out on the streets. The first place we went was out side a bookies, there were many guy's there willing to lend money to us, but none of them checked out. Some denied lending money to the chief and some gave him money but he paid them back, they did see him going in and out many times. So we decided to go to the chiefs house, to search for any more leads.

When we got to his house there were a lot of cars in the driveway. We walked up to the door Murphy knocked on the door, the chiefs widow answered the door.

"Detective Slattery and Dr. Murphy, it's good to see you, how are your investigation's going." She said

"Fine that's why were here we want too ask you a few questions." I said

"Sure, I hope your not thinking I did it." She said

"No, we believe he was killed by a person he owed money to." I said

"Come in we will have to go into the kitchen because there are relatives in the liveingroom." She said

So we went in to the kitchen, down the hallway I looked into the liveingroom there were lots of people in there that looked like the chief. It was freaky.

"Do you want a cup of tea or coffee." She said

"A cup of coffee for me please" I said

"A cup of tea for me. Thanks." Murphy said

"Did you know your husband was a gambler." I said

"Yes I did he was always throwing his money on those stupid horses." She said, "most times he would win but eight out of ten times he would loose."

"Don't we all." I said, Do you know where he would get his money."

"Yea he would go to those people outside the betting office, he would get letters saying he had so many days to pay up." She said, I could see tears rolling down her eyes as she talked to us.

"Do you know of any one else he would get money from." I said

"No, not off hand." She said, and broke down and cried.

We left the house quietly, and went straight back to the station. Stopping to put a bet on the football match on tomorrow. When we got to the station we went into the chiefs office to see if we could find out anything else. We did find something but it was not related to the case. In the chiefs office there was a woman sitting on the desk reading a file. She was wearing a red suit, with black tights, her hair was brown and tied back.

"Who is that lady." Murphy whispered to me.

"I don't know. I never saw her before." I said, "I'll ask her." So I went over to her. "What are you doing here." I said

"I am the new chief." She said

I nearly collapsed on the floor when she said that. I was so embarrassed. Murphy just stood there with his jaw lying on the floor.

"Who are you two and what do you want." She said

"I am detective Slattery, and he is Dr. Murphy. We came here to look for more clues to the old chiefs murder, we did not expect you in here." I said

"That's understandable, so what have you found." She said

"We think he was killed by someone he owed money to." I said

"Is that all you have, an assumption. I am expecting great things from you Slattery." She said

"Ok miss chief sir." I said, and we left her office.

I was so relieved to get out of there. We went back to our office.

"So Murphy what do you think of the new chief." I said

"She is really though." He said

"Yea, but she is a bit of all right isn't she." I said

"Can't disagree with you there. But I would not like to get on the wrong side of her temper." He said

"Your right, but I am sure we will get along fine." I said

"We will learn to get along, you should have said." He said

"I have been thinking Murphy, of a way to find the old chiefs killer." I said

"How slats." He said

"We will pose as two gambler's looking for money." I said

"But they know us already." He said

"Not the killers." I said

"Ok, I am not sure it will work but I will go along with it." He said

So we went back to the betting office. We started to talk to each other about not having any money. Then two minutes later a guy came over to us.

"Do you want a loan of some money." He said

"How much money can you give us." I said

"up to five thousand pound. To begin with, and once I know you can pay me back i can give you any amount you want." He Said

"What will you do if we don't pay back in time." I said

"Nothing much, just maybe kill you." He said

"Ok then come to my car and we can strike a deal." I said

So he followed us to the car. As soon as he was in the car, I locked the door and drove to the station, and put him behind bars. I went into the chiefs office.

"Chief the mystery is solved, we caught the chiefs murderer." I said

"I don't think you have." She said

"What, but we have the killer." I said

"I have got some new information for you. I have just got a confession from the secretary. She thinks the chiefs wife did it because she found out that he was having an affair with her." She said

"This case keeps getting darker." I said

"But it is still bright out side." Said Murphy

We had to let the money lender out, and then we went straight to the dead chiefs house. Stopping to let the money lender off at the betting office. There was only one car in the driveway of the dead chiefs house. Everything was silent then Murphy banged on the door, the chiefs widow answered.

"Detectives how is the case going." She said

"Not to bad we think we know who did it." I said

"Who is it some one I know." she said

"I think so. But there is a few more questions for you to answer" I said, "I am going to have to bring you to the station for questioning."

So we brought her to the station, and put her in a cell to wait for questioning. We had our lunch break at that time. When we came back she had a sad look on her face. The officer said "she had a visitor while you were gone." He did not know who it was or what was said, but when we questioned he she was totally different.

"Ok what questions would you like to ask." She said

"Do you know about your late husbands affair with his secretary." I said

"I do, I found out two days before he died." She said

"where were you on that day." I said

"I was shopping. I can prove it" She said

"Right I want to know now is did or do you hold a grudge against your husband." I said

"Yes." She said

"Enough to kill him." I said

"I can't pretend any longer, I was the one who killed him." She said. I was shocked by this.

"Wow, what was your reason to do such a thing." I said

"I was so angry when I found out. I went and bought a gun. I carefully planned it out. I went into the building across the road, and shot him through the window in the back of the head. I regret it now I don't know what came over me. It was like there was a voice in my head telling me what to do." She said, and started to cry.

"I don't believe this, I can't." I said to her and called in a guard to take her away.

The whole station was shocked by this revelation. I still could not believe it, that she could do such a thing. She pleaded insanity and was sent to a hospital to be rehabilitated. There was a funeral held for the dead chief a few days later, the whole station was there, even the new chief. I don't think there was a dry eye in the crowd, well except for me I never cry not ever.

The first proper day back in the station was weird without the old chief there ordering every one around, but we had a new chief to order us around. I was only in the door ten minutes when I was called in to her office.

"What have I done now chief." I said

"Nothing, I just want to congratulate you on solving that mystery." She said

"Well thanks. It was easy when you gave me that last clue. But I am still not one hundred percent sure she did it." I said

"What she confessed to it how much certain can you be." She said

"I just think she is hiding something." I said

"Don't be so foolish. The case is closed and put away, you solved the mystery." She said

"Yea I suppose you are right." I said

"I also want to apologise for the way I acted when we first met, first day jitters and all." She said

"No problem, the memory is gone." I said.

"Fine, so you are free to go now. That is all I have to say." She said

"Right chief I am looking forward to working with you." I said, and left.

"So Slats what the chief want." Murphy said

"She wanted to apologise." I said

"Really thought you were in trouble." Murphy said

"She also wanted to say what a great job I done in the case." I said

"Oh, who is the chiefs pet now, you are ha, ha, ha." Murphy said

"Shut up Murphy." I said and hit him.
